Recording using Mp3 player
In one of yesterday’s post I mentioned I was on the lookout for a hardware/software recording solution for SWL and scanner listening. Well, it turns out I had something here that works brilliantly. For Christmas this year I received a Sansa Clip+. In addition to being an outstanding portable audio player (with support for WMA, OGG and FLAC, plus available open source firmware like Rockbox) it has an excellent voice recorder on it. Everything is recorded in uncompressed WAV formatting, so it can cleaned up and tuned to the hearts content. Be on the look out for future logs containing captured audio!

“Baton” Commando Solo?
On 5-APR-2011 for a brief instant at 1841 local time, the scanner stopped on 395.1mhz and the words “21 cans of fuel” were heard. I hit manual on the scanner to stay parked there, but heard nothing else, and no noise broke squelch. AFAIK the only unit close to me on that freq is the PA ANG 193rd Special Operations Wing (last known call sign – “Baton”) flying the EC-130J Commando Solo out of Harrisburg International Airport (KMDT). These are birds are for information operations, psychological operations and civil affairs broadcasts, and were in the news recently for info ops above Libya.

Software Recommendations
I’m looking for an easy to use SWL logging program with an audio recorder, or separate recording software with auto time stamping. I’d like to use it for both VHF/UHF and HF/SWL. Keep in mind I’ve only got a G6, a Pro-163, and a Pro-164, so I don’t need anything too fancy. VOX would be nice for the scanners, but obviously won’t work to well on the G6.
The alternative to software recording is a handheld recorder. Any preferred picks?
An Hour (or two) with my G6
A few months ago I “acquired” a Grundig G6 Aviator Buzz Aldrin Edition. The FM broadcast is average at best, the aviation band; god awful, but the shortwave and AM broadcast bands are pretty sweet. As I discovered though, there can be too much of a good thing. I live in Drexel Hill, PA. Right next to Philly, and I thought it was a good idea to get a small wind-up antenna. Well it turns out that that works fine when I take this bugger “down the shore” as they say, but around here it means I’m stuck with nothing but noise. But, the whip on the back of this little thing is perfect here. So, once a week I’d like to spend an hour or so hitting the auto search function just to see what happens. Here’s the latest:
